Ecotourist Highlights in August and September
Late August to late September is the best time for orchid lovers. Best spots are:
• Foxes Lair. Many species but some only in 1 place. check FL wildflower map.
• Yilliminning Rock. After climbing the rock to enjoy the view and find Lemon Scented Sun orchids, see the uncommon spider orchids on the Orchid Walk.
• Highbury Reserve has a standout Stark White Spider orchid display in September. Take mosquito repellent.
• The Orchid Walk at Newman Block, has outstanding wildflowers. Also see wildflower display on the Sandplain Walk
• There are many great walking trails at this time of year. I love the ones at Candy Block.
• Consider some half to full day excursions that include a number of stops. For examples Yilliminning Rock to Toolibin Lake (see orchids opposite entrance) then Facey House at Wickepin, or Narrogin town Foxes Lair and Railway Dam, or Yornaning Dam/Dryandra.
• Book a tour to see endangered marsupials at the Barna Mia Nocturnal Animal Sanctuary. Tours: Friday, and Saturday (except for public holidays)
• Go on a numbat, echidna and bird spotting drive through Dryandra Woodland. (Get a guide from Dryandra Country Visitor Centre)
• Grab a coffee or bite at Narrogin cafes, Highbury Tavern and general store, Wickepin Motel and Cuballing Tavern.
