Mites are minute animals that are either plant pests such as the introduced Red legged Earth Mite or parasites on insects and larger animals
Ticks are larger blood sucking parasites and beneficial predators. Reptile ticks can be found in the ears of most bobtail skinks but they do not affect mammals. Kangaroo ticks readily move to humans from late spring to early winter. Avoid sitting on the ground or brushing against low vegetation; there is not a problem if one stays on tracks. Tick bites are generally mild but people vary in the time taken for the itch to disappear.
