I found a potential solution to the tree-sucking bugs in the form of a red tiger assassin bug. The name alone is enough to make one run the other way, and they reinforce this with bright red and black colours and a spear like proboscis. They jab the spear into prey inject enzymes to liquefy its innards and then suck it out. If you are silly enough to mess with one, they can also inject you with painful results. Please don’t kill them as they are a very beneficial insect and don’t go looking for trouble.
The bug shown is a nymph (juvenile) that hasn't developed wings. Note the wing buds on its back.
